Edwin Kwong

Concert Organist

Edwin Kwong is one of the most active young organists in Melbourne, Australia, having performed in over 85 concerts in the past six years. He was most recently the Director of Music and Organist at St Matthew’s Anglican Church, Cheltenham, and previously he was the Director of Music and Organist at St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Burnley from 2014-18. Before completing high school in 2013, Edwin was the Senior Organ Scholar at Haileybury College in both 2012 and 2013; he was also the Inaugural Organ Scholar of Queen’s College, University of Melbourne in 2014.

He maintains an interest in a wide variety of music, and his repertoire spans over 750 years, including both original and transcribed works. He has given the Australian premieres of organ works by Julien Bret (France), Walter Gatti (Italy), Zsolt Gárdonyi (Hungary), Bára Grímsdóttir (Iceland), Jesús Guridi (Spain), Naji Hakim (France), Alfrēds Kalniņš (Latvia), Jon Laukvik (Norway), Richard Madden (New Zealand), Nico Muhly (USA), Fredrik Sixten (Sweden), and Henk Temmingh (South Africa).

Edwin has been involved in three CD recording projects thus far in his young career: at Haileybury College, Queen’s College, and St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Richmond. His recordings have been broadcast on 3MBS Radio in Melbourne, and also overseas on Radio New Zealand.

Edwin regularly performs on the organs of the chapels, churches, and cathedrals of Melbourne, Australia. He is the most frequent performer in the Melbourne University Series of Organ Concerts (MUSOC), and is a regular performer at many of the NextGen young organist concerts, organised by the Australian and New Zealand College of Organists.

Internationally, in 2013 Edwin performed at the chapels of Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge in the United Kingdom. He has also performed in New Zealand regularly since 2014, at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland, St Paul's Cathedral, Dunedin, the Cathedral of St Paul, Wellington, and most recently at Waiapu Cathedral, Napier. His most recent European engagements included a featured concert in Nancy Cathedral, France, as a part of the Orgue! Festival 2018, as well as performing in Lund Cathedral, Sweden as a part of the 2019 Lördagkonsert series.

Edwin has participated in master classes with renowned organists such as Kevin Bowyer (Organist, University of Glasgow), David Goode (Organist, Eton College), Stefan Kießling (Assistant Organist, Thomaskirche Leipzig), Timothy Noon (Director of Music, Exeter Cathedral), Benjamin Sheen (Sub-Organist, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford), Johann Vexo (Organist, Notre Dame de Paris), and Dr John Wells (former City Organist, Auckland). He was a long-time student of the renowned concert organist, Thomas Heywood.
